Herringbone Tile in the Shower: Why It Takes a Pro

By Aleksey Kushchuk, White Saber · Last updated 2026-11-03

Short answer: Herringbone is one of the most requested shower patterns, and one of the least forgiving. Every tile is cut and set at an angle, so the layout has to be planned to the wall so lines stay straight and cuts stay even at the edges and niches.

Why it is harder

Lots of cuts, a strong center line to hold, and nowhere to hide a wandering row.

Where it shines

Herringbone works beautifully in a few spots.

  • Accent walls behind the shower head
  • Floors
  • Niche backs
  • Backsplashes

Pair it

Herringbone accent with simple walls keeps it from getting busy.
